The Prayer of St Augustine – The Restless Heart

You have made us for yourself,

and our heart is restless

until it rests in you.

 

I place myself at the door of your knowing,

trusting that your knowing is already within me.

That my turbulent heart is not an exile,

but a home still learning how to be at peace.

 

Nourish my soul, O God.

 

In our searching,

the divine is already walking with us,

waiting only to be acknowledged.

 

In the broken presence of others,

in their pain and their compassion,

you are present.

 

When we give,

when we stay,

when we dare to be here for one another,

something sacred is released.

 

And in that inner place

where our restless heart beats upon the sea of this world,

we are held.

 

O God…

is this your hand?

Is this your light touch?

Is this you,

manifest in this fragile and beautiful world.
