A Prayer for the Turning Soul
Spirit of Life,
In the stillness of this moment,
we bring before you the silent ache of those who feel lost,
those whose soul has drifted from its course,
not out of failure, but out of a deeper calling
that words can barely name.
If our plans have unravelled,
if the ground beneath us has shifted,
help us not to ask, “Why has this happened to me?”
but instead, “Where might this take me?”
Remind us, gently,
that sometimes the soul grows tired
of walking in the same direction,
even if that road is noble, even if it once brought joy.
Help us listen to the subtle whisper within
that longs for a new horizon,
even when fear tells us to stay put,
to cling to the familiar,
to resist the winds of change.
We name the things that chain us:
addiction, expectation, the need to be needed,
security, comfort, reputation…
and all the invisible ties that keep us walking old paths.
But You, Divine Presence, Sacred Mystery,
God or Universe or Love Unfolding,
You sometimes laugh at our carefully drawn maps.
You stir the wind,
scatter our signposts,
and open doors we never planned to knock upon.
So, help us tread lightly.
May we walk this world with humour and humility,
knowing that life does not always go to plan,
but it often goes to soul.
As the poet warned us,
we may be treading on dreams, our own or another’s.
Let us tread gently, with wonder.
And when the path turns unexpectedly,
grant us the courage not to resist,
but to follow.
Amen.
