The New Colossus Is Broken
In the shadow of the brazen giant of old,
Once a beacon of hope, now tarnished and cold,
Stands a land once welcoming, now gripped by fear,
Its doors closed to the weary, yearning to be near.
A mighty woman with a torch once led the way,
Her heart aglow with empathy, her flame a bright display,
But now her light grows dim, and her gaze turns inward,
As the western world succumbs to a darkness self-incurred.
In place of storied pomp, a hollow echo reigns,
As compassion fades, and self-interest remains,
No longer reaching outward to the world beyond,
The western world retreats, the bonds of unity gone.
The tired and the poor, the huddled masses in need,
No longer find solace, no hearts left to plead,
For empathy has waned, and compassion ebbed away,
In the pursuit of wealth, humanity led astray.
Yet still we hope, that one day the flame will reignite,
A spark of love and kindness, to guide us through the night,
For the Mother of Exiles may still rise once more,
To lift her lamp beside the golden door.
